Bonfire Night is the perfect time to gather around a cozy fire, enjoy delicious treats, and create lasting memories with family and friends. What better way to celebrate than with these delightful chocolate cupcakes that are as fun to make as they are to eat? They’re easy enough for kids to help with, making them a perfect family-friendly baking activity.
Ingredients
For the Cupcakes:
- 8 oz sugar
- 8 oz butter
- 6 oz self-raising flour
- 2 oz cocoa powder
- 4 medium eggs
Quick Tip: If you want to save time and ingredients, you can also use Betty Crocker’s chocolate cake mix. It’s a convenient option that’s often more cost-effective if you’re not planning to use all the individual ingredients.
For the Topping:
- 250 g icing sugar
- 250 g salted butter
- Chocolate flakes (for decoration)
- Yellow food coloring
- Red food coloring
Instructions
Step 1: Bake the Cupcakes
- Preheat your oven to 180°C (356°F) or gas mark 4.
- In a large bowl, combine the sugar, butter, flour, cocoa powder, and eggs.
- Mix all the ingredients together until you achieve a soft, smooth batter.
- Line a cupcake tray with cupcake containers and fill each one with the mixture.
- Place the tray in the preheated oven and bake for 22 minutes.
- Once baked, remove the cupcakes from the oven and allow them to cool completely on a wire rack.
Step 2: Prepare the Topping
- In a bowl, cream together the icing sugar and salted butter until the mixture is smooth and fluffy.
- Divide the mixture into two equal parts.
- Add yellow food coloring to one part and red food coloring to the other, mixing each until the colors are vibrant.
- Spoon the two differently colored mixtures into a piping bag, positioning them side by side. This will create a dual-color effect when piped.
Step 3: Decorate the Cupcakes
- Pipe the icing onto each cooled cupcake to create “flames” on top. The mix of red and yellow will give a fiery appearance.
- Break the chocolate flakes into smaller pieces and arrange them on top of the icing to resemble logs around a bonfire.
Enjoy!
These chocolate cupcakes are sure to be a hit at your Bonfire Night celebrations. Not only are they visually impressive with their flaming tops and log-like decorations, but they’re also deliciously rich and chocolatey. Enjoy them with your favorite hot beverage while watching the fireworks light up the night sky.
